What Makes Me Effective

A Trusted Advisor

What sets me apart as a consultant is my role as a trusted advisor to my clients. Over the course of my career, I’ve discovered that consulting goes beyond delivering solutions or expertise; it’s about the unique qualities and values we bring to our work. Often, these qualities emerge through the insights and reflections of the clients we serve. Their feedback has been instrumental in helping me understand my distinctive approach.

A pivotal moment of self-realization occurred while I was revising my website. After drafting its content, I reached out to clients for their thoughts. Many provided constructive feedback, but one client, also a close friend, offered particularly striking commentary. While he acknowledged the website was good, he felt it failed to communicate what he called my “special sauce.” His honesty prompted deep reflection on what truly differentiates me as a consultant.

He explained that my honesty—my willingness to speak candidly, even when it might be uncomfortable—is what sets me apart. This candor, he said, is rare among consultants, many of whom prioritize saying what they think the client wants to hear. In contrast, my approach fosters environments where difficult truths can be shared and explored constructively.

This realization helped me understand that consulting is rooted in trust, courage, and authenticity. My role is not just to affirm my clients’ perspectives but to challenge them respectfully, sparking growth and guiding them toward transformative outcomes. By leaning into hard conversations and navigating tension with professionalism and care, I help clients uncover insights they might otherwise overlook.

The Power of Honest Feedback

A Divisional VP at Abbott Labs once shared why he frequently invited me to their headquarters: my willingness to provide honest feedback rather than pandering to client expectations. This perspective resonated deeply with me, reinforcing the importance of offering genuine insights while upholding professional integrity.

I’ve had moments where this approach proved transformative. In one particularly tense negotiation involving three major oil companies, emotions ran high, and disagreements threatened progress. When one participant, the group leader, reacted strongly to another’s comment, I addressed the issue directly, even taking the risk of calling out his behavior. Though my candor startled the room, it ultimately led leader to acknowledge his frustration, apologize, and refocus the group. This breakthrough paved the way for a solution that satisfied everyone involved.

Moments like these underscore the value of addressing tensions head-on. By creating a space where all voices are heard and respected—even if they challenge one another—I aim to turn potential conflict into productive dialogue. It’s not about provoking confrontation; it’s about fostering an environment where collaboration thrives.

Transforming Tension into Opportunity

Clients often tell me my honesty has been pivotal to their success. One client admitted after a particularly challenging conversation, “That was tough to hear, but it was exactly what I needed.” Comments like these reaffirm my belief in the power of candid communication to drive real, lasting change.

Ultimately, my approach as a consultant goes beyond delivering expertise—it’s about guiding clients through discomfort to uncover deeper insights and solutions. By embracing the complexities of human dynamics with courage and authenticity, I strive to build relationships that are not just transactional but transformative, built on trust, respect, and the shared pursuit of meaningful growth.

Building Resilience Through Candor

This method has left lasting impressions on clients, shaping not only their immediate strategies but their overall approach to problem-solving and collaboration. By leaning into the discomfort inherent in difficult conversations, I’ve witnessed teams evolve—members gain confidence to articulate their thoughts and challenge assumptions without fear of reprisal.

It’s a transformational process rooted in vulnerability and authenticity. The willingness to confront issues head-on fosters an environment where creativity thrives, and solutions become multidimensional. Over time, these engagements transcend the boundaries of consulting, becoming shared journeys of growth and enlightenment. Clients who learn to navigate challenges with transparency develop the resilience needed to face future obstacles.

The Heart of Consulting

At its core, my role as a consultant is not about making the process easier; it’s about creating stronger, more sustainable outcomes. By addressing the hard truths, I help clients navigate challenges and equip them with the tools needed for long-term progress and innovation. This commitment to both the truth and my clients’ success is what defines my “special sauce” as a consultant—a blend of honesty, courage, and trust that transforms not just projects but people.
